There is no doubt that Morocco has become one of the preferred hosts for major Confederation of African Football (CAF) tournaments in recent years.
As WAFCON continues to capture the attention of football fans across Africa and beyond, many have questioned why so many prestigious competitions continue to be awarded to one country when several other African nations also possess the capacity to host them successfully.
While there is nothing wrong with Morocco hosting continental tournaments, CAF must ensure that the integrity of its competitions remains beyond reproach. During WAFCON, hosting rights should never create the impression that the host nation enjoys an unfair advantage in its quest for the title.
This concern is informed by previous controversies that have attracted criticism from football lovers across Africa and beyond.
One such incident occurred during the last AFCON, when Senegal’s victory over Morocco was reportedly overturned by CAF over allegations of misconduct by the Senegalese team.
The decision generated widespread debate, with many critics arguing that such controversies undermine confidence in African football administration and could damage the credibility of WAFCON and other CAF tournaments.
Similarly, many football fans still recall Morocco’s legal challenge following its women’s national team’s defeat to Nigeria’s Super Falcons.
Although every nation has the right to seek legal redress where it believes injustice has occurred, such disputes have continued to fuel perceptions of bias whenever Morocco hosts major CAF competitions, including WAFCON.
As the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) progresses, CAF has another opportunity to reassure football fans that fairness, transparency, and sporting merit remain the guiding principles of its competitions. Match officials and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) must discharge their responsibilities with complete neutrality, free from any real or perceived external influence.
The beauty and credibility of football lie in fair competition. The best team on the pitch should emerge victorious, regardless of whether it is the host nation or a visiting side.
Any perception that results are manipulated to favour the host country would diminish the integrity of WAFCON, erode public confidence in African football, and cast doubt on the credibility of CAF competitions.
CAF must therefore protect the credibility of its competitions by ensuring that every participating nation is treated equally.
Only through fairness, transparency, and impartial officiating can WAFCON and African football continue to earn the respect and admiration they deserve across the world.
